
General Kendo Terms

Agaru (v)
To experience an unusual mental condition in one's first match or in a big tournament. To become overexcited and unable to control one's mental and physical condition. To successfully finish up a part of one's keiko or work. To make progress in developing one's skills. To be promoted to a higher dan (grade).
Ai-chudan (n)
The state where both players are in the chudan posture (middle guard position) during matches, practice or or kata performance.
Ai-gedan (n)
The state where both players are in the gedan posture (lower guard position) during matches, practice or kata performance.
Ai-jodan (n)
The state where both players are in the jodan posture (upper guard position) during matches, practice or kata performance.
Ai-ki (n)
The state of facing each other with strong fighting spirit and with one's ki in sync with one's opponent's ki and fully focused on the opponent. A player often intentionally avoids adjusting his or her ki to that of the opponent; this act is called ai-ki-wo-hazusu (avoiding ai-ki). See ki.
Ai-tai-suru (v)
To face each other with strong fighting spirit
Aite (n)
An opponent; a person who a player faces in a match, keiko or kata performance. Shiai-aite (an opponent in a match) and keiko-aite (an opponent in keiko) are also used. An aite is also a person who helps one's training.
